Graphene-based Advanced Materials for Membrane, Coatings and Energy Applications

Abstract/Technology Overview

Graphene, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope with diverse properties such as superior electric conductivity, thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, flexibility and low density, amongst others. By tuning the surface functionality, various graphene derivatives and composites can be synthesized using low-cost wet process.

Different technological solutions that address different issues like anti-fouling, durability of coatings and long service life Li-ion batteries, etc., have been developed by exploiting the unique properties of graphene.

Some examples are:

  • Filtration membranes for desalination, industrial waste water treatment, etc.
  • Coatings for transparent and super hydrophobic surfaces, anti-corrosive and anti-microbial, etc.
  • Lightweight and highly efficient Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles

Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages

Some of the features for the technologies developed are as follows:

1. Membranes for water filtration

  • Ambient membrane-fabrication conditions
  • Robust large-area (20 cm × 20 cm and above) free-standing membranes
  • Unique graphene enabled nano-channels to achieve high water flux (79 L/m2/hr) and low salt permeability (3.4 g/m2/hr), which is about 7 times more efficient than commercially available cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane
  • Superior anti-fouling properties
  • Tunable hydrophilicity of the membranes
  • Industrially scalable membrane fabrication process

2. Coatings

  • The ability to coat large surfaces on metals, semiconductors, ceramics, polymers and glass and the ability to coat fibres, rods and bars
  • Designed for coil-to-coil and conveyor applications from batch to continuous process
  • Environmentally safe to benign
  • Flexible technology in terms of coatings uses for: hydrophilic, hydrophobic, super-hydrophobic (contact angle ~130°), oleophilic and oleophobic applications
  • Variable coating thickness (from monolayer to few layers)
  • Tunable physical/chemical properties
  • Good adhesion to substrates

Li-ion batteries

  • Extreme weight benefits, save over 70% on battery weight
  • Longer service life, three times the average life cycle
  • Fast charging, can be charged from depleted to full charge in less than 30 minutes
