Rapid End Point Mobile Device For Detecting Freshness of Meat

Abstract/Technology Overview


The invention offers a quick and convenient method to determine the freshness of their meat products. Consumers are increasingly concerned about food safety and the freshness of their food. However, there is no end point detection device in the market that offers consumers a convenient way to analyse the freshness of their food, especially for meat products. Present methods using chemical and microscopic analysis are not viable for end consumers as the process can be tedious and time-consuming. Further, such methods will require an individual to be trained and requires bulky equipment.

The invention offers a quick method of detection using a handheld and smartphone app. The device uses a gas sensor to analyse the gases emitted from the meat specimen to determine the freshness. The process is straight forward, users only need to place the device in close proximity to analyse the freshness of the meat. Results take less than a few seconds to determine the freshness of the meat. 



Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages


The invention uses an electronic sensor as a nose to detect the gases and volatile compounds emitted by meat products. As bacteria begin to break down meat related products, more gases and volatile compounds are released in larger concentrations. The invention uses a set of algorithms to relate freshness of the meat with the type and concentration of the gases and volatile compound emitted. The invention is also capable of taking into consideration the type of meat product and the physical environmental conditions that could have accelerated the deterioration of the meat product.
